05 Jan 2010 : Routine By : Stephane
Hello all!
First of all happy new year to all!
Here it is the routine pretty much, we did bought a electric planer which make me save 2 or 3 days by pieces! We also received a new blade for the band saw, which let me cut into 8" of wood like if it was butter ... this one too is a time saver!
Catherine finally get hired full time at the job for a contract of 18 months (Which is perfect). A friend let us borrow is wood heater to put in the extension of the garage to warm up this winter.
The extension is still not open until we are starting to bolt together all the pieces, 4 pieces are done and the fifth should be finish in a day or two (9 pieces in total). It's getting there slowly!
We have put pictures in the gallery of another #116 that we are builing but that was done some years ago. The hull line will stay the same, but we gonna make some change on the deck (and colors).
We will have more info/pictures to put as soon the backbone will be up. Right now it's pretty much the routine of gluing which they pretty much all look the same.
Have fun all!
22 Dec 2009 : Nothing really new... By : Stephane
Hello all!
Nothing really new in the last 2 weeks... the day pass by with planning and clamping wood to make slowly all the 9 pieces to bolt together the backbone.
It take me several days to achieve a 1/64" or less joint between the pieces, they are wide and thick so clamping will not move them much to fix defect ... (I also do it with hand tools, no money for machinery for now)
Winter settle in and we have now around 1 ft of snow (30cm)... We started to trap rabbit in the forest at the back of the building site which is now part of our routine as the boat.
I will need another 3 weeks before finishing all the part of the backbone, some piece need to be done with veneer to follow the curve (1/4 thick piece bend to a shape) and this take a good amount of work.
Take care all!
30 Nov 2009 : Gluing By : Stephane
Hello all,
I know it's been quite a while!
Well ... let's see we received the glue we are waiting for 3 days ago. I have done all patterns of the pieces (Profile view) last week, and started this weekend shaping parts for the boat! We just finished to glue 2 big pieces together. This is where we discover that we (Me & Catherine) are both perfectionist!
I have planed the wood until my straight edge show absolutely no gap to the size smaller then a hair, then with Catherine finding gap, I put a sand paper into my plane and sand lightly every where and correcting those little gap left. Both pieces was near perfection before gluing!
Strong clamp every foot, and messy glue was done and now we have a glue line less then 1/64 everywhere, as a thin paper sheet... Resorcinol asked for tight fit and high pressure, well I think if the glue fail it won't come from there!
We are putting new pictures into the Gallery section.
Have fun all!
11 Nov 2009 : It's getting there! By : Stephane
Hello all!
So here we go received lot's of wood this week. Some really nice quality of it and it smell good into the shed!
We started the extension of the shed for the building, we will extend it only 10 ft for the winter then adding 20 ft and move the backbone into it next summer. It's just with the investment on wood, glue, clamps etc ... we needed to cut somewhere as we have limited fund.
I am rebuilding all my planes during that time, and only waiting the next pay check to buy the glue and start the wood. The glue is only available in 1 place in all north America because I want the best adhesive available on the market, for those who know it's a high strengh gap filling resorcinol (Aerodux 500).
I have also finished the fairing all the lines on the lofting and will start the making of patterns this week. Everything worked with good timing for now!
Catherine still got some work but it's as a replacement with maybe a opening at the end. We gonna wish and see!
Take care all!
30 Oct 2009 : Wood is coming. By : Stephane
Hello everyone,
sorry to have been lazy a bit on Internet in the last few weeks.
Nothing really new happen in our world now, we became a bit of a routine. We ordered and will receive next week a good part of the wood needed (3000 pounds(1360 kilo) of wood). We bought in the same time black locust for the frames, he was having some nice pieces air dried since 8 years and we saved the shipping for buying it now.
Our credit card are now on the limit, and we will begin the routine of working and pay the credit, put more on the credit etc ... Until the boat is finish! ;) We have a real problem finding the glue that we want for the backbone, and the one place I have found is really expensive (500$ us for 1 gallon (3,23 liter)) but I think we gonna go for that. Having to repair the backbone if one day the glue fail will cost us more then that! For those interested it's some Aerodux 500, a gap filling improved resorcinol.
Hopefully we will have some nice pictures to put online soon!
Take care all.
Stéphane & Catherine.
18 Oct 2009 : White oak ... No way! By : Stephane
Hello All,
What's new since last time ... Let's see ...
The lofting is getting there, I am to fairing all the lines in every directions to have a nice smooth hull at the end, it's quite interesting to work on a 3d drawing plan.
We got one bad news and one good one since last time. Our huge pieces of oak were green, and it was the only place we have found them in solid pieces. Some pieces being 12" thick ( +/- 30cm) we needed a special oven to dry it out, or let it sit for 6 years until working with it. The special oven call us to tell it will cost 9000$ CAD + 3 months to dry them out ... Ok so we changed plan!
We have found some Douglas Fir 4" thick good quality for sell in Ontario, already dry and ready. So we gonna order that and some resorcinol glue and laminated the big pieces together. We didn't want to do that at the beginning but sound's like nobody carry huge dry wood anymore, just not worth it with the time needed to dry them out.
Will see how that goes! Need a lot of clamp .. Some pieces are 19' long ! (5.8 meters)
We are working on a video of our backward Atlantic crossing, hopefully we will put that online soon.
Have fun!
14 Oct 2009 : Band saw in... By : Stephane
This week we received the band saw and almost finished to install it. The lofting getting more close to the end, it was a longer process then expected to redo the whole thing, but it is a lot more accurate then what it was!
Catherine may have found a job, and slowly everything look to go together. Except maybe for the white oak that we have problem to found a place to dry it out ... Too thick for most of the oven around, and can't wait 6 years to air dry it!
And ... we do miss a lot our sea life!
