19 May 2009 : Atlantic crossing #2 ... backward!
By : Stephane

Hi All,
so there we go the weather look no bad for tomorrow ...

Boat and crews ready to go, so we are heading to cross the North Atlantic backward ...
We got a small device "spot" to check our location during the crossing.

The device doesn't garantee that the message will be deliver, so nothing to worry about if no news have been online for days ... We got the Epirb if there is a real emergency!

15 May 2009 : Finally a decision had been made.
By : Stephane

Hello all,
a long decision that we are been working on since 4 months had been made.
Some of you know it already and some other's doesn't even have a clue.

Let's try to put all that together ... The crossing from the Azores to Portugal last year made a lot more damage then what I talked about on the website... The whole deck delaminated and the fiberglass on several area cracked totally through it, related to my opinion of the age of the boat (30 years) and some twisting of the hull related to hard sailing. Contessa are good boat, but they are also getting old and need special refit to be back like before.

Talking about this to several peoples, some oportunity arise from several places. First a opportunity of a free place to live, and free shed with all the tools to work on the Atlantic coast. Second free lead and free bronze and bronze casting ... Third we found a designer that we liked, and that he draw special boat plans for us and our specifications.

So what is happenning like your can probably guess ... is building a boat. Same size, and we will use every parts on "Joshua III" to put in the other one to save times and money ... This is why also we will call the next one "Joshua III". Like Catherine say, we are not changing boat, we are only changing the shirt of this one.

We already seen the building place when we were in Canada, we already looked for all the materials needed and made contact, we already got the plans and ask 1000 questions to the architect(Paul Gartside) that we thanks a lot. We planned everything down to me working full time on the boat and Catherine working for the finance(She already may found a job). We plan around 2 years for the building...

The boat is a wooden boat, 26 foots with strong laminated frames and laminated deck but with a tradionnal carvel planking hull. We still plan to don't have a engine on the next one, and probably removal of the electricity too ... Here is the design : http://www.gartsideboats.com/catsail4.php#116a

So after taking our final decision this week we will be leaving for the building site next week probably, the building site is in Gaspesia, close to Nova Scotia in Canada for those not familiar with this area.

So we think it will be worth it after 6 years of cruising, to take this opportunity and keep going in 2 years with a brand new boat able to go where we want. It's sure change a lot of our original plans, but this is why it take us 4 months to take the final decisions, and let's not forget that this is why we are travelling, for living things that we have never planned.

27 Apr 2009 : Back in Spain
By : Stephane

Dear Everybody,
so here we are back in Spain on our little Joshua...

We are happy to be back on our little home and everything stay the same since we left, except maybe for all the bird's shit on the deck. We changed some halyard, installed a sculling oar, put a new regulator for the solar panel and getting ready to go.

We thing to rent a car this week or the next one to go see some friends in France and discover the inside of the east coast of Spain.

We also changed a bit the description on the website. We received some emails from people giving us "shit" because of the trip and informations given. I think the website was badly writen because people can easily think that we are doing this for a certain amount of time, that we have just started and judge our own decision base on that.

For myself it's been 6 years in a row that I live on small boat(Soon 7 years), cruise on them and live this way ... it is also not a project that will finish at a certain point because it's a life style that I came to love and will not change soon. Like the pardey said .. We will do it as long as it's fun...

I just wanted to clarify this point.

On that we hope to give you more news soon on our travel, and wish you great fun with the summer coming!

Stéphane & Catherine.

By : Stephane

Hey Everybody!
Sorry to be so bad in the news lately ... Being back a normal worker for 2 months take all my time!

Since I am here, I have the chance to meet up with Nick from www.bigoceans.com when I was in New York .. And I confirmed he is as crazy as people say... But between crazy persons we understand each other well.

Since that, I am rebuilding a house for making some money and seeing at doctor for fixing my back problem. Everything is going well and we are ready to go back in Spain the 21 of April.

Nothing to say really ... normal 40 hours a week and lot's of thinking.

Hope to give you more interesting news next time!

12 Feb 2009 : I know its been a while!
By : Stephane

Hello everybody ...
I know I didnt give any news since a long time but nothing really to say.

We are still in the ghost town of Almerimar, having gales after gales force wind on us, week of rain just to name a few. Its sunny right now and its been a while it was not as nice! Since last time, nothing happen really worth telling, fixing the boat, got some little work, my back hurting once a while, and a tooth that needed care from a dentist before I pull it myself.

We have taken a big decision, and will be heading back in Canada by plane the 18 of this months for 2 months. Working a bit to finish paying the windvane and marina fee for the winter and back on sailing in April. I will have a little stop in New York to see Nick on his Contessa where he his waiting for the winter to pass too.

Life is good, and everything is getting together.

Take care everybody!!

08 Dec 2008 : Winter quest
By : Stephane

Good morning all! :)

To give a little update, a decision had been made and Joshua will need to stay here 3 months alone with our friends. So what is happening ... well it's time to earn some freedom chip and for that it's time to travel on land! The backpack are now ready to hitch hike a ride to south of France where a friend offer us a place for the winter close to Marseille and some hope to found some work.

Ready for other adventures, and ready to go north! We should be leaving soon, just waiting for some packages.

I have put new pictures online in the Med section.

Have fun all!
